1. What sparked your interest in cybersecurity and led you to become a SANS instructor?
   Throughout my life, I’ve maintained an insatiable curiosity for unravelling the inner workings of various systems, be it mechanical and electrical setups or the intricate world of IT and computing. My fascination consistently revolved around the notion of pushing boundaries: How could I reimagine functionality? What concealed capabilities lie within? Could I coax the extraordinary out of tools never meant for such feats? An enthusiastic explorer, frequently straying into uncharted territory, often voiding warranties in the process.
2. How has your role as a Principal Technical Architect for SANS Ranges enriched your understanding of cybersecurity’s real-world challenges?
   Crafting capture-the-flag ranges catering to cybersecurity novices and seasoned experts proves to be a formidable undertaking. Yet, amidst the challenges lies a steady stream of novel insights, an ever-flowing spring of fresh information that beckons further exploration and research opportunities.
3. Can you share a memorable teaching moment from your experience instructing SEC488?
   The beauty of each class lies in its unpredictability — you step into the unknown, not knowing the faces that will fill the room. With every teaching session, I embark on a journey of revelations, unearthing unexpected gems that make the experience truly unique. For me, every day I don’t acquire fresh knowledge is a day squandered.Navigating the realm of Cyber Security introduces you to a tight-knit community. Connections appear from the most unexpected corners — those who’ve crossed paths with your colleagues, those who recognize you from documentation, past incidents, or infrastructure blueprints. In this expansive yet remarkably interconnected industry, it often feels like we’re navigating the same small pond, where ripples spread far and wide.
4. In your view, what’s the most exciting development in the cybersecurity landscape in recent years?
   Undoubtedly, AI is making a grand entrance, quite possibly standing as the most remarkable stride in recent times. However, despite its prominence, the practical application and complete understanding of this technology remain somewhat nascent. Resources are shifting from conventional defensive strategies towards novel AI and machine learning ventures, yet these pursuits are still in their infancy, awaiting a mature stage to unlock their complete capabilities—both those that could serve the greater good and those that might raise concerns.
5. How do you balance staying ahead in such a rapidly evolving field while teaching its fundamental concepts to others?
   Our foundational principle revolves around learning, practicing, and experimenting. As both a SANS instructor and a Cyber Security Practitioner, I find every day to be a learning opportunity. My interactions span from newcomers to seasoned experts in the field. A week spent immersing oneself in conferences and events can spark innovative ideas, but the aftermath involves weeks of dedicated research to fully grasp the novel concepts generated.
   However, realism is crucial. The wealth of knowledge is vast and cannot be distilled within a mere week. Thus, content must be carefully tailored, attuned to the audience’s expertise, and reflective of the dynamic technical landscape. In this multifaceted journey, we strive to strike the right balance between imparting knowledge and adapting to the audience’s needs.
